International Women’s Day offers an opportunity to recognize the growing contributions of women in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Across Africa, women have played a meaningful role in advancing patient care, education, research, and leadership within the specialty. Their continued involvement reflects both progress made and the importance of sustaining opportunities for future generations.
Within Africa, the role of women in oral and maxillofacial surgery has been significant since the early development of the African Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
At the time of the Association’s formation, its leadership structure included three principal officers: President, General Secretary, and Treasurer. From the outset, women were represented within this framework. Across successive administrations, women surgeons have continued to contribute actively through leadership roles, educational initiatives, and academic programs.
Women colleagues have also played an important role in strengthening education and training across the continent. Their leadership in academic programs and professional development initiatives has supported the continued growth of oral and maxillofacial surgery in Africa.
These contributions reflect a broader principle. When opportunity, mentorship, and leadership are accessible, the entire profession benefits. The continued advancement of women surgeons remains essential to the future of the specialty.
Dr. Elimairi also acknowledges the leadership of Dr. Rui Fernandes and Dr. Jocelyn Shand of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons for their efforts in recognizing and elevating the contributions of women within the global OMS community.
On this occasion, we celebrate women surgeons whose dedication to patient care, education, and scientific progress continues to shape the future of oral and maxillofacial surgery across Africa and beyond.
